Special Care Counselling glossary

Hi, my name is Scola Nzoyikorela. I am at Sherbrooke College for two semesters. I am studying in Springboard to a DCS for now, but I will change for the next semester. I will study in special care counselling techniques. I have created this glossary to help myself and students interested in Special Care Counselling. This glossary contains the meaning of 20 words to help understands them, and they are related to Special Care Counselling. Each word has a definition, an audio pronunciation to help people say word correctly, an example of way we can use words in a sentence and have an image.

autonomy: noun; The right or condition of self-government.; Example: Towards the end of the assignment I felt very strongly that we were 'performing' as a team, as we now had clear goals as the case study began to come together and we all had a clear sense of AUTONOMY.; fr: autonomie
intervention plan: noun; A blueprint for helping a student build specific skills or reach a goal. In other words, it's an action plan.; Example: Is based on the occupational behaviour frame of reference which focuses on the importance of occupation and having a balanced variety of occupational roles.; fr: plan d'intervention
crisis intervention: noun; A short-term management technique designed to reduce potential permanent damage to an individual affected by a crisis.; Example: While it addresses many accessibility issues, it does not expressly require LEGAL SERVICES to be made accessible in terms of their existence.; fr: intervention de crise
social integration: noun; The process during which newcomers or minorities are incorporated into the social structure of the host society. Social integration, together with economic integration and identity integration, are three main dimensions of a newcomers' experiences in the society that is receiving them.; Example: First, the EU has undergone economic integration (by which a transnational economy is fostered), but also political integration (transfer of sovereignty to supranational organs) and SOCIAL INTEGRATION (creating a transnational society).; fr: intégration sociale
rehabilitation: noun; The action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness.; Example: Considerations in the application of elevation: mode of elevation duration of elevation frequency of elevation REHABILITATION protocol following soft tissue injury must include mobilization techniques to insure good functional adaptation. A program combining manipulations, the use of modalities, mobilization technique, and a strengthening program will insure optimal.; fr: réhabilitation
behavior modification: a noun phrase; The alteration of behavioral patterns through the use of such learning techniques as biofeedback and positive or negative reinforcement.; Example: Rewarding a person after completing the desired behavior four times.; fr: modification du comportement
developmental domains: noun; A somewhat arbitrary grouping of related skills and behaviours.; Example: Annette smiles, claps her hands together and exclaims, “OK! Good job!”.; fr: domaines du développement
intellectual disability: noun; A disability that affects the acquisition of knowledge and skills, in particular any of various neurodevelopmental conditions affecting intellectual processes, educational attainment, and the acquisition of skills needed for independent living and social functioning.; fr: déficience intellectuelle
autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): a noun; Neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave.; fr: trouble du spectre autistique (TSA)
loss of autonomy: noun; A reduction or complete removal of an individual’s or community’s capacity for self-governance, independent decision-making, or control over their own circumstances.; Example: Another criticism of SAPs refers to the LOSS OF AUTONOMY of countries in the politics of policy formulation.; fr: perte d'autonomie
observation: noun; The action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information.; Example: The result of unsupervised learning is a new explanation or representation of the OBSERVATION data, which will then lead to improved future responses or decisions.; fr: observation
helping relationships: noun; A relationship in which at least one of the parties intends to promote the growth, development, maturity, or improved functioning of the other.; Example: Share your lunch with your friends or help them.; fr: aider les relations
adaptation: noun; The action or process of adapting or being adapted.; Example: It is suggested that the possible reflection of severe lifestyle and cold ADAPTATION during the last ice age. Thus this essay focused on the Question of how much Neanderthal anatomy represents adaptations to the cold environments, with representing the significance of Neanderthal living environment, the climate reconstruction by oxygen isotope ratio analysis in deep sea sediments, and possible anatomical ADAPTATION with several theories and researches.; fr: adaptation
substance abuse: noun; Overindulgence in or dependence on an addictive substance, especially alcohol or drugs.; Example: Nature imparts the freedom and exhilaration she seeks, literarily making her feel high; 'The land was flattening out I was getting so high up and a hot haze had appeared in the clear bright light,' where as alcohol and SUBSTANCE ABUSE often leaves her feeling; 'queerish.".; fr: abus de substances
mental health issues: noun; Disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior.; Example: For Asian Americans'.; fr: problèmes de santé mentale
physical/Neurological Impairment: noun; Conditions that target how your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) functions.; Example: Alzheimer's Disease.; fr: déficience physique/neurologique
psychoeducation: noun; A therapy intervention that involves the therapist providing their client with information about their diagnosis, symptoms, or the method of treatment used.; Example: For schizophrenia.; fr: psychoéducation
functional Assessment: noun; The determination of a person's level of function and ability to perform everyday tasks and requirements of living.; Example: Observational. A professional directly observes a client’s natural environment and how they respond.; fr: évaluation fonctionnelle
social Exclusion: noun; A situation where not everyone has equal access to the opportunities and services that allow them to lead a decent, happy life.; Example: Good quality housing is kept for the host population by the threat of discrimination and SOCIAL EXCLUSION, thus 'forcing' immigrants to live together.; fr: exclusion sociale
self-Regulation: noun; The fact of something such as an organization regulating itself without intervention from external bodies.; Example: Without their own SELF-REGULATION, English lawyers may similarly develop a culture of resistance to external regulation, merely complying with minimum standards rather than striving for best practice.; fr: autorégulation
